We are delighted that Lincoln has been awarded a grant of £12m from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the Project ‘Lincoln Castle Revealed’. This will be a huge boost not only to the City and to the historic County of Lincolnshire, but also to the whole of the East Midlands. It enables the medieval Castle to tell the remarkable story of its place in history, and also allows Lincoln Cathedral’s 1215 Magna Carta to be displayed in a setting suitable ...Read more →

Holy Week and Easter at Lincoln Cathedral

Posted on March 23rd, 2012, written by

We offer a full programme of services for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter. Everyone is welcome. Holy Week marks the final days of Jesus’ early life. It begins in triumph as we commemorate on Palm Sunday his entry into Jerusalem on a donkey. The mood then becomes sombre as we approach the crucifixion on Good Friday until the final victory is assured on Easter Day. On Palm Sunday at 10.30 the procession with Palms from the Castle begins at ...Read more →

Philip Buckler, Dean   Gavin Kirk, Precentor   Mark Hocknull, Chancellor   John Patrick, Subdean ******************************************************** As we enter Passiontide and look towards Holy Week and Easter our thoughts and prayers are shaped and sharpened by the music of this season. The magnificent performance of Bach’s St John Passion here in the Cathedral recently set the scene. It underlined just how powerful music can be in enabling us to enter into the deepest meaning of those events in the account of God’s redeeming ...Read more →

Sermon preached in Lincoln Cathedral by the Dean, the Very Revd Philip Buckler,at the Sung Eucharist on Mothering Sunday (Lent 4), 18th March, 2012 This Fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Refreshment Sunday – allowing a brief relaxation from some of the penitential observances of Lent. “Dreams of Gold”, Lincoln Cathedral Flower Festival, 16-20 August – a very Lincolnshire way of celebrating the Olympics 2012 will see us all caught up in the excitement of the Olympic Games. Lincoln Cathedral and the Lincolnshire branch of NAFAS ( National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) have been inspired by this to celebrate the games in a very different, and very Lincolnshire, way. Every few years the Cathedral hosts a wonderful display of the flower arrangers’ art. This year’s ...Read more →

Certainly not Prunes. Lincoln Theological Society’s Lecture March 14th, 2012.

Posted on March 16th, 2012, written by

Years ago when fruit arrived seasonally parishioners gathered at their church hall eager to enjoy the advertised strawberry tea.  Unfortunately the strawberry season had arrived too late and on the noticeboard the word “strawberries” had been crossed out and “prunes” written across it. The throng that gathered for the LTS lecture at Bishop Grosseteste College might have felt sympathy for those parishioners when they learned that the expected lecturer had taken ill at the last minute and that the Chancellor ...Read more →

It was lovely to see you

Posted on March 12th, 2012, written by

It was a joy to welcome so many people to the Cathedral over this last weekend. If you were one of them, I do hope that your visit was memorable for all the right reasons. It does matter to us that your experience was positive and so, with the help of students from the University of Lincoln, we will in April be conducting a survey of our visitors’ experience. If you would like to take part, please e-mail me at ...Read more →

Chapter Letter 11 to 24 March 2012

Philip Buckler, Dean   Gavin Kirk, Precentor   Mark Hocknull, Chancellor   John Patrick, Subdean It is more blessed to give than to receive is a well-known saying attributed by St Paul to Jesus (Acts 20.35). Nevertheless there is a time both for giving and for receiving – and we need to have the humility to be able to receive as well as the generosity to give. Many of us will have known people who seemingly give of their time and indeed themselves ...Read more →
