Winners of Advent Composition Competition, ‘A Song for Advent’ announced

Posted on October 18th, 2013 | 0 Comments

This composition competition asked entrants to write a new setting of the Matin Responsory.

The first prize winner is John Eady and his piece will be premiered by Lincoln Cathedral Choir on Saturday 30th November 2013, 6pm (Lincoln Cathedral).

The second prize winner is George Richford and his piece will be premiered by Lincoln Cathedral Consort on Saturday 7th December 2013, 7.30pm (Gainsborough Church).

We were overwhelmed with the response from composers, receiving 49 entries in total from all around the world, including entries from Australia, America and Canada as well as the UK.  The standard was incredibly high, many entries coming from professional musicians and composers, and music and composition students.

The winning compositions were chosen, after lengthy deliberation, by the four-person panel from Lincoln Cathedral, in a strictly anonymous adjudication process.

Many congratulations to the two winners, and many thanks indeed to all those who entered this competition.  We enjoyed looking at all the compositions, and picking the winners was not a straightforward decision.

We very much look forward to the two premieres on 30th November and 7th December.

There will be two further opportunities to hear John Eady’s winning piece at two Carol Services at Lincoln Cathedral on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December, both at 5.30pm, performed by Lincoln Cathedral Choir.
