Volunteer
Volunteers are at the very heart of the Cathedral.
There is hardly any aspect of what we do that is not done at least in part by people who give their time and skill for no payment in money. Without them barely anything would function.
That is only part of the story. There is something about this place that draws people in. I’m emlpoyed now as Chapter Clerk, but for five years I volunteered as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Happily there is whole range of volunteer roles that have nothing to do with money, are hugely enjoyable as well as being worthwhile. With around five hundred vulunteers there is also a wonderful sense of companionship and community. The atmosphere at the annual volunteers party in the nave is clear evidence of this.
So, what can you do and what is the first step?
Some of the main areas of volunteering are described further through the highlighted links, the full list looks something like this: Stewards, Servers, Guides, Library, Needlework, Bellringers, Vergers’ Assistants,Welcomers, Shop.
If this interests you, call John Campbell, the Dean’s Verger, on 01522 561638 and explore the possiblities.
