Medieval Mathematics……Masterly or Muddled!
This illustrated talk is for anyone who is interested in the natural philosophers of the Middle Ages and how they ignited a renaissance of learning, based on Ancient Greek and Arabic sources.
You will also be invited to participate in some drawing and to investigate how much the mathematics of the time might have influenced the building of Lincoln Cathedral, in particular the great east window. This event will be held in the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral
If you were scared by your mathematics teacher at school, please come!
Tickets cost £10 to cover costs and to help raise funds to run local masterclasses. Tickets will be available from February 20th from the Lincoln Cathedral shop (tel:01522561644/ shop@lincolncathedral.com) or Unicorn Tree Books.
This event is in aid of Mathematics Masterclasses for young people in Lincolnshire which is one of the network of approximately sixty groups supported by the Royal Institution of Great Britain. These classes are aimed at enriching the experience of able young mathematicians at the local level, not unlike the aim of the RI’s Christmas lectures on TV. On the Saturday immediately following this event, these pupils will be taking part in a similar class though more mathematical in content. More information can be found on www.mathslincs.org
