The eighty properties in the cathedral ownership which ‘circle’ the church are referred to as being in “The Cathedral Close”. They comprise a wide range of residential and commercial buildings which are mainly of Grade 1, 2 or 2* significance. The age of the properties vary some dating back to medieval times, for example the Vicars’ Court properties were built in the late 13th century, and many architectural features survive. The residential portfolio consists of sixty-four properties from one-bedroom flats through to four-bedroom houses, some with large gardens, some with none. Eight properties are used to house the residential canons and cathedral officers in post and the rest are available to rent. The standard terms for renting are a seven year fully-repairing lease with a three yearly rent review.
The sixteen commercial properties, on Eastgate, Minster Yard and Exchequergate, are occupied for various purposes such as school, shop and office use. Twelve of these buildings are available to rent but the majority of these are currently let on long leases.
