The tradition of daily morning and evening prayer is one inherited from the Jewish tradition of both Temple and Synagogue, with which Jesus himself was familiar.  By the fifth century this had been adopted in a modified and extended form, by communities of monks and nuns, as well as by the bishops and clergy of cathedrals.
