Legacies
It’s a common myth that only the rich and famous leave money to charity when they die. This couldn’t be any further from the truth. The reality is without the gifts left in people’s Wills, we wouldn’t be able to preserve and restore this magnificent building for future generations to enjoy. The ultimate charitable commitment to Lincoln Cathedral is to name it as a beneficiary of your Will. Legacy income to Lincoln Cathedral is the largest source of support in a given year and contributes almost 12% of our annual income.
Thankfully, 74% of the UK population support charities like us and when asked, 35% of people say they’d happily leave a gift in their Will once family and friends had been provided for. The problem is only 7% actually do.
That’s why, if we all left some money in our Wills for charity as well as our family, we can make a huge difference. So, you don’t have to be rich and famous to make a contribution that can make a difference. You can do something amazing just by leaving a gift in your Will to Lincoln Cathedral.
Anyone can leave a legacy – it is EASY and AFFORDABLE and YOU DON’T HAVE TO LEAVE A HUGE AMOUNT! It can be a specific amount or a percentage of your overall estate.
So that we may thank you and include you further in the life of the Cathedral, please tell us if you have left a gift in your Will. You will be invited to join the Cathedral Society, to find out about the many benefits associated with this membership group click here.
If you already have a Will you can amend it and include the Cathedral by simply adding a codicil form click here for more information.
Lincoln Cathedral pre-dates the Charities Act and therefore doesn’t have a Registered Charity Number (with the exception of the Music Appeal that was set up in 1993). Please be clear on how you instruct your solicitor; please choose one of the following areas to avoid any misunderstanding:
The Corporate Body of Lincoln Cathedral
Unrestricted fund that covers all areas generally including; worship, mission, education, maintenance, music and choir.
Restricted specially for building, restoration & maintenance work.
Restricted specially for the Wren & medieval Libraries.
Lincoln Cathedral Music Fund (Charity No. 1033089)
Restricted specially for the Cathedral Choir, music & instruments.
We recommend that you contact a solicitor who will guide you through amending or writing a will. We work with a number of local solicitors, some who offer free will writing services, please contact us and we can advice you of the latest offers.
