Lincoln’s biggest theatrical event is back in the extraordinary setting of Lincoln Cathedral this spring, as the Starring Lincoln Theatre Company brings together over 200 performers and a live orchestra to perform The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

With just nine weeks to go until launch night, Starring Lincoln has shared details about the actors taking on the lead roles in this much-anticipated production.

Leading the show as Quasimodo, the Hunchback himself, is Andre Buhagiar, a performing arts student at the University of Lincoln. Andre, who is 20 years old and comes from Siggiewi in Malta, is in the second year of his studies at Lincoln, and has fallen in love with the beautiful city, especially the splendour of its gothic Cathedral.

The self-confessed ‘musical theatre geek’ shone through during the audition process and is excited to be taking on the role in such an iconic location. Speaking at rehearsals for the show, Andre said, “To be performing the lead role in a musical of this scale is incredible. It could be described as terrifying but I’m hugely excited. Rehearsals are well under way and I’m so pleased to be performing alongside so many extremely talented people.”

“Since coming to Lincoln, I’ve been warmly welcomed by the people here, it is a home from home and I truly feel like I belong. Lincoln Cathedral has to be the most fitting venue for this performance – second only to Notre Dame itself – it’s one of the world’s most stunning buildings, with its own gargoyles and brilliant, haunting features, not least the bells!”

This view is echoed by Ben Poole, Creative Director of the Starring Lincoln Theatre Company, who explained, “For many years I’ve wanted to stage Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Lincoln Cathedral. From its vast and monumental interior to the medieval faces carved into the stone, every detail, component, and character within this breath-taking building is made for hosting the spectacular.”

Alongside Andre, the actors playing other lead roles have also been announced. Indrija Kustov will play Esmerelda. A free-spirit who uses her talent as a dancer to support herself, Esmerelda is independent and strong-willed, she speaks her mind and stands up for what she believes in, including fair treatment of Roma and the sequestered Quasimodo.

Ben Goode is taking on the part of Captain Phoebus De Martin, the dashing new captain of the Cathedral Guard; conflicted between following his duty and doing what’s right.

Ben Poole will portray Dom Claude Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. A righteous man with a strong sense of obligation to his brother Jehan and nephew Quasimodo, Frollo’s strict devotion to the Church supersedes all else.

Ben Poole added that these huge community productions have become iconic in the city and beyond. “We know that the scale and the spirit of inclusivity in the production is also matched by its quality. Many people who have seen West End and Broadway shows have also come to Lincoln for these major events and told us they are unforgettable experiences that offer a scale, energy and unique atmosphere even shows in London and New York cannot match.”

The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Lincoln Cathedral, performed by the Starring Lincoln Theatre Company is taking place form 23 May–4 June and tickets, which are expected to sell out are on sale now on our events page.
