One of the greatest joys of being full-time at the Cathedral is the daily round of services. Joyful in the regularity and the variety. The routine brings a wonderful rhythm to my working day as well as a rewarding discipline to my Christian life.
From earliest times, Christians have gathered at regular hours during each day and night to respond to God’s word with praise on behalf of all creation and with intercession for the world. And not only Christians, for within Judaism and Islam, we know well that each day is punctuated with prayer. It is of course easier for religious communities to live this pattern as the day in convents and monasteries is organised around the times of prayer. While cathedrals have the staff and the congregations to support many services, parishes across the country will offer prayer once or twice a day, fitting in with our more secular daily existence…
