Annunciation will be marked on Saturday 25th March with special readings and prayers at all our services throughout the day, but in particular with a special Evensong at 5.30.
At this service, incense and candles will be used as a reminder that we bring all that we are in worship. Extra hymns are sung and the choir will sing an extra anthem, reflecting Mary’s role in the narrative of our faith. The service will conclude with a procession to the statue of Mary at the East End of the Cathedral and with a formal blessing.
The Annunciation, celebrated every year on the 25th March, is a miniature anticipation of Christmas. Celebrated nine months before Christmas, it is the feast when we remember the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary to announce (therefore “annunciation!”) that God had chosen her to be the mother of Jesus, the Christ-child.
