‘Preserving the Penultimate: The Church and Healthcare’, As seen through the eyes of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Albert Schweitzer’
by Dr Robert Mark Jaggs-Fowler, Physician, PhD student, and Ordinand. Author of The Healing Enigma” The Physician Priest in the 21st Century (Troubador, 2018)
By the end of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life, his theology focused on the ‘here and now’, which he called the ‘penultimate’. Albert Schweitzer, whose life overlapped that of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, had similar ideas which he put into practice by running a missionary hospital in the Gabon. This lecture examines whether Bonhoeffer’s theology and the praxis of Schweitzer might together form a theological mechanism for the Church to re-assert its place in society by having a more significant involvement in 21st century healthcare.
This lecture has been organised by the Chancellor on behalf of the Lincoln Theological Network. Click here to find out more.
