Lincoln Choral Society are performing this fascinating and emotionally stirring work, and will be accompanied by Lincolnshire Chamber Orchestra conducted by Mark Wilde – Musical Director of Lincoln Choral Society.

Mozart believed that he had been cursed to write a requiem as a ‘swansong’ for himself as he was convinced of his imminent death! In early 1791 an ‘unknown, grey stranger’ turned up at the composer’s door saying he represented someone who wanted a Requiem from Mozart on the understanding that he did not seek the identity of his patron. Spooked by the commission, Mozart threw himself obsessively into the work, but he died aged 35 before he could finish the composition which was then completed by his pupil Süssmayr, to whom the composer had given detailed instructions about its completion.

Regardless of who wrote which parts of the Requiem, it still sounds wonderful – and in the words of Beethoven “If Mozart did not write the music then the man who wrote it was a Mozart!” Let you the audience decide! In addition to the Requiem there will be extracts from Mozart Operas [trios and arias] including the aria “Queen of the Night” from The Magic Flute with its extreme range. An aria reserved only for the most daring soprano and of course we have one for the night!
