Medieval knights and Roman soldiers – just two of the characters children will have the chance to dress up as at the Lincoln Cathedral marquee at this year’s Lincolnshire Show, held on the 22 and 23 June.
Families are invited to bring their little warriors to stand DZ–02 to have fun dressing up as one of the historic figures from our great Cathedral’s colourful past as part of the Lincoln Cathedral Connected project.
Lincoln Cathedral Connected is a £16million scheme to radically improve the Cathedral’s setting and visitor experience – offering more engaging and dynamic spaces for a wider number of visitors to enjoy.
Connected is a hugely significant milestone in the Cathedral’s history and aims to engage people in the Cathedral’s past, archaeology and architecture through activities and events to educate, inspire and inform.
The Connected team will be on hand at the stand to share the exciting plans with visitors while the children dress up and learn about the Cathedral’s history, plus complimentary tea and coffee will be available courtesy of Stokes of Lincoln.
As well as knights and soldiers, costumes will also be available for other important characters such as St Hugh of Lincoln, also known affectionately as the Builder Bishop. St Hugh was responsible for rebuilding and enlarging the cathedral in its famous Gothic style following damage by an earthquake in 1185.
Katherine Swynford will prove popular with little girls keen to dress up in flamboyant medieval dress. Katherine was the wife of John of Gaunt, a wealthy landowner in Lincoln. They lived opposite the Cathedral and Katherine’s tomb is one of the beautiful carved canopy tombs that can be viewed within the iconic building.
Lincoln Cathedral Connected has been earmarked £12.4million by the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake this ambitious project. Funds will be used to complete conservation work on the incredible West Front, landscaping of Dean’s Green to create a new public spaces, and a new visitor centre including a larger café and shop, new toilets and a Changing Places facility, and exhibition spaces to display some of the Cathedral’s treasures.
The Lincoln Cathedral stand is open to visitors from 8am to 6pm on the 22nd and 23rd June at The Lincolnshire Showground.
