Mark Hocknull, Chancellor John Patrick, Acting Dean & Subdean Philippa White, Succentor
Summer seems to have taken a long time in coming this year: the weather hasn’t helped and a number of serious and tragic news events have meant that the traditional “silly season” has not materialised. Perhaps all the more reason that we should look to having some time for rest and a break from the norm and the everyday. August is traditionally the month of holiday and recreation and there is no denying that recreation is good for the physical welfare of the individual and for general welfare of the wider community to which we all belong.
But look again at that word RECREATION, it literally means re-creation. God has created each one of us as an integrated person with body, mind and spirit. He has created us in such a way that we need recreation and renewal. We ignore the maker’s instructions to our cost. We need a special time of recreation for body, mind and soul.
Jesus said: “Come to me all who are weary or heavy laden and I will give you rest.” We all feel weary and heavy laden at times. Physical rest and recreation goes a great way in helping but, I would suggest, we also require spiritual recreation and renewal. And for that spiritual renewal you don’t have to travel – although it’s worth noting that spiritual retreats are enjoying a renaissance at the moment – you can do it in your own home making time in your life, making space in your life, for the Holy Spirit to renew and recreate your spiritual health and awareness. In our so often busy lives how good it is to sit down and read, speak to others about your journey of faith, wait quietly and expectantly upon God perhaps in the quiet of our own homes, a local Church or Cathedral. Ten minutes or a couple of hours it will be time well spent.
If you are going away over the next few days or weeks I trust you will enjoy a relaxing break, if you are on holiday as you read this I pray you will know God’s recreation in this House of Prayer; but whether home or away may you experience God’s spiritual recreation and renewal and may be refreshed in body, mind and spirit.
John Patrick, Acting Dean & Subdean

The Dean’s Verger writes – Dan Aukland Joined us, in the Vergers’ Department, as Bedel and Junior Verger eight and a half years ago, bringing with him his experiences gained in retail security and a pony tail. Alas the pony tail moved on but his experiences linger and have been used well in his time with us.
Dan leaves us to move on to a new career, as an assistant house parent, at Queen Ethelburga’s School in York, we hope that he takes with him the experiences gained from his work here in the at the Cathedral and uses them well for his future development.
