Remember to say ‘thank you’.
As a child, many was the time I left the house with those words from my mother ringing in my ears: remember to say ‘thank you’. I was probably leaving to go and play at a friend’s house, or to have supper with extended family who lived nearby. My mother’s constant reminders meant that as a child, I remembered to say ‘thank you’ quite a lot.
As an adult, how often do I remember to say ‘thank you’? Less frequently than I should, I’m sure.
And you? How often do you remember to say ‘thank you’?
We are about to enter a time of remembering in the life of the church as we keep the festivals of All Saints and All Souls at the beginning of November, and then remember the fallen on 11 November.
In a very real sense, each of these occasions is an opportunity to remember to say ‘thank you’. At All Saints, we remember and say ‘thank you’ to the saints of God who have gone before us and given us an example to try to follow as we attempt to be good disciples of Christ in our time, as they were in theirs. At All Souls, we remember and say ‘thank you’ to our loved ones whom we see no longer but who gave us so much while they lived. On Remembrance Sunday, we remember and say ‘thank you’ to the countless number whose sacrifice made it possible for their fellow women and men to live in peace.
When many of us come into the cathedral, or just before we leave, we often light a candle at the Gilbert Pots or at the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As we do so, we pause to name anyone we know to be in need, and who we want to remember before God. As we enter this season of remembering, why not also light a candle and say ‘thank you’ for someone who is for you an example of all that is good and true; light a candle for someone who, simply by their presence, makes a positive difference in your life now; light a candle for someone who, by the things they say and do, makes the love God real in your everyday life.
Light a candle – and remember to say ‘thank you’.

Volunteer Announcement
It is with great sadness we inform you of the recent deaths of two Cathedral Guides.
Alison Kelley died suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday 12 October. Alison was a Floor Guide and Learning Volunteer with the Cathedral and an active and enthusiastic member of both groups. Alison will be sorely missed.
Rod Wetton sadly died on Saturday 19 October. Rod had been involved with the Cathedral for many years and during his time here was Head Guide and Volunteer Representative on the Cathedral Council. Rod was instrumental in developing the Cathedral Guide training programme and was delivering training until last year. Many people in the Cathedral will have fond memories of Rod.
We hold Alison, Rod and their families in our thoughts and prayers.
Bringing up the elements at the 9.30 Eucharist
The senior steward on duty at this Eucharist asks three people to bring up the elements and prayer cards. To enable more people to be involved, we are trialling a new selection system. If you would like to bring up the elements/prayer cards, please sign up on the list on the Community Association noticeboard (in the crossing).
On the Sunday you have chosen, please arrive by 9.10am and check in with the senior steward on duty. Any of the stewards wearing a blue sash will be able to tell you who that is. If you have not brought up elements before, the senior steward will run through what is needed. If you have not spoken to the senior steward by 9:10 am, then other people will be asked to replace you. That is because the senior steward needs to know in very good time that she/he has people to bring up the elements. We will review this new system in three months’ time.

The Dean’s Verger writes
Congratulations to Jo Blanchard (Verger 5) for her success in passing the Church of England Guild of Vergers Foundation Course, this achievement provides an opportunity for her to proceed with the Guild’s Diploma Course, we wish her well as she embarks on the next three units; Pastoral, History and Administration.
The Campbell Marras
Thank you for supporting our recent Bake Off. We had a fun night with over 20 cakes for John Campbell to try! Everyone is a winner, but those taking honours on the night were: Most eye-catching cake: Janet from visitor services, Best textured cake: Claire from volunteers, Cleverest cake: Grace from the Works department, Overall winner: Tracy from the Cathedral Shop. We managed to raise another £51.29 for the BHF, taking our total fundraising for the last 6 months to just over £1080.
Entries are now open for the Lincoln 10k if anyone would like to join our running or walking groups. We also have a group running the Lincoln Santa Run – you are welcome to join us. Entry is open for this too, it is suitable for any age and dogs are also welcome!

Organ Concert – La Nativité du Seigneur
Come and experience Jeffrey Makinson in concert on the grand Father Willis organ in Lincoln Cathedral.
Olivier Messiaen’s 1935 masterpiece is considered to be one of the greatest Organ compositions of all time. La Nativité du Seigneur is a Christmas tradition at Lincoln Cathedral and one not to be missed.
