On Friday 15 and Saturday 16 September the UKRO Festival of Rescue has been taking place at locations across Lincoln including at the Cathedral.
The event is being hosted by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, and will see more than 300 professional rescue and trauma competitors competing in a range of challenges which include vehicle extrication, rope rescue, trauma care and water rescue.
At the Cathedral exercises took place in the Nave beneath the central tower, on the lower Dean’s Green and on Exchequergate.
As well as being a public spectacle, it is also a vital training exercise for those involved and Lincoln Cathedral particularly pleased to be involved in the rope rescues which will provide our fire officers with real-life training should we ever need to rescue a casualty from height – something that we hope we never need to do but is a possibility give the nature of our building and our work.

For over 30 years, the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation (UKRO) has, and continues to be, at the forefront of development and innovation in the field of professional rescue, ensuring rescue and trauma professionals both in the UK and internationally, are able to adapt and respond to existing and emerging risks. During this time, UKRO has acquired a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
The UKRO is formed and run by practitioners predominantly from within the Fire and Rescue and Medical sectors with a passion for advancing professional rescue. Both serving and recently retired rescue and trauma professionals, the dedicated UKRO team of volunteers come from across the UK, amassing their knowledge, skills and experience.
