Prayers for Peace

With tensions high in many communities across the country at the moment, there will be many people who wish to hold our communities in prayer.  Praying for peace is a regular part of our work of prayer at the cathedral, and we have been praying for all those confronted by aggression and violence in our communities at all our services over the last few days.  People who wish to join together in prayer are invited to join us to do so at our daily services (held at 8am, 12 30pm and 5 30pm on most days – full details can be found at: https://lincolncathedral.com/worship-music/services-list/).  For those who wish to find a quiet space to offer their own prayers at other times, the Morning Chapel is available for private prayer throughout the day (from 8am to 5 30pm).

For those who would find them useful, some prayers for peace are provided below.

Almighty God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom
those who take counsel for the nations of the earth
that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward,
till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

God our Father,
your Son is our peace
and his cross the sign of reconciliation:
help us, who share the broken bread,
to bring together what is scattered
and to bind up what is wounded,
that Christ may bring in the everlasting kingdom of his peace;
who is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

Amen.

O God, from whom all holy desires,
all good counsels, and all just works do proceed;
give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give;
that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments,
and also that, by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

Look upon us in mercy not in judgement;
draw us from hatred to love;
make the frailty of our praise
a dwelling place for your glory.

Amen.
