The Bishop of Lincoln has announced the appointment of eleven new canons for Lincoln Cathedral. Each year, the Bishop, the Rt Revd Stephen Conway, invites a number of people, both lay and ordained, to take up this honorary role.
The role of canon is one of great importance in the common life of the Cathedral and Diocese. The Constitution and Statutes of the Cathedral state that non-residentiary and lay canons shall ‘seek to contribute to the corporate life of the Cathedral and to promote its mission and service in the diocese.’
Our new ordained canons have been appointed for a variety of reasons, recognising longstanding service in the Diocese, faithful and committed parish ministry, and particular contributions to our shared mission and ministry across Greater Lincolnshire. Our new lay canons, including an ecumenical lay canon, are new members of Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body. For them, the invitation to become a canon is to recognise the commitment they have made to support the work of the Cathedral and draw them more fully into the corporate and spiritual life of this holy place.
New canons will be installed in the Cathedral on Monday 17 November, at 5.30pm, at Festal Evensong to celebrate the Feast of St Hugh of Lincoln. You are warmly welcome to attend this celebration!
