Table for the Station!

Join us in Lincoln Cathedral from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November 2024 as the Table for the Nation becomes the Table for the Station!
Come and see a stunning model railway and two scale locomotives at the Table for the Nation in the Cathedral.

Built by father and son Micheal and Andrew Sharpe over a period of more than two years, the model shows Spilsby Great Northern Railway station in the period 1900-1920. As the station no longer exists, the project included a lot of historical research, as well as creating much of the track work, buildings, locomotives and rolling stock from scratch.

The railway has been exhibited at many shows, from Perth in Scotland down to Swindon and at the NEC.

You’ll also be able to see ‘IMP’ – a 71/4” gauge replica, built by Michael and Andrew, of a full-size Ruston and Hornsby 44/48 diesel shunter loco based at ‘Rocks by Rail’ near Cottesmore. The full-size loco was built in the Lincoln works in 1941 and has been restored by the three owners – Michael,  Andrew and their friend Christopher Johnson – to running condition over the last 3 years.

Also on display will be ‘Owen Tudor’ a 31/2” gauge steam locomotive built by Lincoln Cathedral organist and composer Dr. Philip Marshall. He was a real steam railway enthusiast and built a couple of miniature steam locomotives in the 1960’s while he was organist and Master of the Choristers at Ripon Cathedral.

One of his compositions ‘The Spiritual Railway’ was performed on the platform of Lincoln Central Station upon the Closure of Lincoln St. Marks station.

Viewing the model railway on the Table for the Nation is included in your cathedral admission. Don’t forget, if you can gift aid your admission you’ll receive an annual pass allowing you to visit the Cathedral for free for the next 12 months.
