A Time of Remembering
November is a time of remembering: on this Remembrance Sunday we say, yet again, We will remember them. And that theme of remembrance runs throughout the month. We remember on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, on this Remembrance Sunday and on those days when we commemorate individuals: St Martin (11 November), St. Margaret (16th November), St.Hilda (19 November) and St Cecilia (22 November). Next week of course we also remember St. Hugh of Lincoln, Bishop and Pastor, Builder and Diplomat.
Hugh’s names will be read out next Sunday in Evensong (17th November) along with those who over the last 1000 years have in ways both great and small been associated with this Cathedral Church.
As I hear names read from the “Obit Book” at the final service of every day I find it a Godly reminder: of those who have gone before us; that we are here for just a moment in time; and that we are one with those who have gone before us. The belief that we are one with those who have gone before us is not some form of superstitious hocus pocus. In the Creed we affirm our faith in the Communion of Saints and because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, we believe that we are linked either side of death, in one Communion through the Holy Spirit. The Saints are those who are hallowed – made holy – because they are one in Christ forever.
This “Kingdom Season” as it is called helps us to rejoice in those who have gone before us in the faith knowing they are safe and one in Christ with us in the Communion of Saints. This means that as we worship here on earth we worship with angels and with archangels and with all the company of heaven. Death is no longer anything to fear and life becomes an exciting adventure knowing that come what may, we are made whole in Christ.

This popular service is gentle and reflective with time to wonder and explore, encouraging everyone to use all their senses; it offers a different way to experience worship at Lincoln Cathedral.

LCCA
Following on from the visit of Rachel Baxter, Community Engagement Officer at YMCA, to the LCCA AGM, members of the Cathedral Community are invited to a Drop In Day at the YMCA on Saturday 16 November between 10am-4pm, to view the work which has been done to provide night shelter for the homeless. The Dean’s Verger Writes…
Christmas comes but once a year as does the appeal for help during the Christmas Market.
We seek help in four main areas of the Cathedral’s mission of hospitality; Welcoming – working with the Visitor Service Team and the general Ministry of Welcome, Stewarding – assisting the established team of Stewards who help with the smooth running of activities sacred and secular, Chapter House – supporting the Refectory Staff with the serving of refreshments in the Chapter House, General Support shadowing the Verging Team with general duties and staffing the vestry telephone.
There will be a matrix of two-hour time slots available in the Vergers Vestry from Sunday 17 November please sign up – any and all help appreciated.

Victoria and Albert: Treasures of a Royal Marriage
Following Tristram Hunt’s lecture in the Cathedral, we would encourage you to visit the exhibition ‘Victoria and Albert – Treasures of a Royal Marriage’, which is open daily in the Collection and the Usher Gallery until 5 January. It features some of the earliest treasures to be given to the V&A Museum.

Handel’s Messiah

Organ Concert – La Nativité du Seigneur
Come and experience Jeffrey Makinson in concert on the grand Father Willis organ in Lincoln Cathedral.
Olivier Messiaen’s 1935 masterpiece is considered to be one of the greatest Organ compositions of all time. La Nativité du Seigneur is a Christmas tradition at Lincoln Cathedral and one not to be missed.
