Archdeacon of Lincoln

The Bishop of Lincoln is pleased to announce the appointment of the Revd Canon Gavin Kirk, Precentor of Lincoln, as Archdeacon of Lincoln.

Gavin (54) spent much of his early childhood in Lincolnshire, and was educated here before attending the University of Durham, and then training for ordained ministry at Chichester Theological College. He holds a Master’s degree from Heythrop College, London. After ordination, Gavin served in the dioceses of Chichester, Rochester and Portsmouth before becoming Precentor of Lincoln 13 years ago.

The appointment follows a rigorous selection process from a broad field of candidates, with an interview panel that included a rural dean from the diocese, the interim Archdeacon of Lincoln, and a serving archdeacon from a neighbouring diocese.

The Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Revd Christopher Lowson, said: “I was delighted to be able to appoint a candidate drawn from our own existing cohort of clergy in the Diocese of Lincoln. I look forward to welcoming Canon Kirk to the senior staff team, and to the huge contribution of wisdom and experience that he will bring as we continue to build the work of the diocese in ministry and mission.”

On taking up the post as Archdeacon of Lincoln after Easter 2016, Canon Kirk will have particular responsibility for clergy recruitment, discipline and certain legal functions related to parishes in the Archdeaconry of Lincoln.
