2. Discover Summer at Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle continues to be one of the city’s most captivating attractions, and this summer brings an exciting calendar of events to make your visit even more memorable. Just a short stroll across the cobbles from the Cathedral, the castle hosts everything from live music to immersive theatre.

This season’s highlights include the Wind in the Willows outdoor theatre production on July 30 and a full medieval jousting weekend on August 2 and 3. Music lovers can catch world-class acts such as Texas, The Human League, and Rag ‘n’ Bone man performing as part of the Live at Lincoln Castle series.

If you’re visiting outside of event dates, the castle still offers plenty to explore. Walk the medieval walls for stunning views over the city, take a tour of the Victorian prison, and view an original 1215 Magna Carta inside the castle’s secure vault.

The wide, open grounds make for a perfect picnic spot or space for children to play. Entry to the grounds is free unless a ticketed event is running, so be sure to check the official listings before your visit.

3. Take a Ghost Walk Through Haunted Lincoln

Step into Lincoln’s darker side with the popular Lincoln Ghost Walk, which departs from outside the Visitor Information Centre at 7pm every Wednesday through Saturday. 11. Visit the International Bomber Command Centre

The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) in Lincoln is a must-visit destination, offering a blend of history, remembrance, and education. Featuring a striking Memorial Spire, standing 102 feet tall to match the wingspan of a Lancaster bomber that can be seen for miles around, it provides stunning views of Lincoln Cathedral, a landmark cherished by WWII bomber crews.

The Walls of Names honor nearly 58,000 individuals who lost their lives serving Bomber Command, creating a moving space for reflection. Inside the Chadwick Centre, interactive exhibits tell powerful personal stories, bringing the realities of aerial warfare to life.

Surrounded by tranquil Peace Gardens, the IBCC not only commemorates sacrifice but also fosters understanding, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts and visitors seeking meaningful experiences. With many events happening throughout the year, IBCC is a great place to visit.

12. Explore Lincoln’s Roman Ruins

Long before the days of William the Conqueror or the signing of the Magna Carta, Lincoln was already making its mark on history. Back in Roman times, it was one of the largest settlements in Britain, and traces of that era are still visible across the city today.

Roman relics are scattered throughout Lincoln, with sections of the original city walls still standing. The most impressive remnant is Newport Arch, a surviving part of the northern city gate.

Remarkably, it’s still in use today, making it the only Roman arch in the UK that continues to carry traffic. You’ll find it at the north end of Bailgate, perfect for a detour before grabbing lunch and a drink at the Duke William pub nearby.

Roman history pops up all over Lincoln, including the East Gate which can be spotted just outside The Lincoln Hotel, while the lower west gate is tucked inside City Hall. Even a bit of shopping can turn into a history lesson—just head to No. 44 Steep Hill, where a trendy boutique shares space with the remains of the upper south gate.
